JCS once again demonstrates academic excellence. TVAAS scores indicate our students’ academic growth outpaced others across the state of Tennessee.  

Each year the Tennessee Department of Education provides school districts with two equally important pieces of information relating to student performance. We have already shared our achievement scores. Our language arts scores have grown beyond the numbers attained prior to the pandemic. We currently have more students meeting the grade level expectations than we did in 2018 - 2019. Our social studies scores are higher than the state in each grade level tested. Our math scores, while not yet back to pre-pandemic numbers, are within 2 percentage points across all grades. This morning, the Department of Education gave us permission to release additional data for the 2021 - 2022 school year. This information, known as the Tennessee Value Added Assessment System (TVAAS), provides schools with growth data. It allows us to see how our students grew compared to peers across the entire state. This information, created from end of year assessments known as the TCAP, shows that our students outpaced their peers across the state of Tennessee.

TVAAS data is measured on a scale of 1 - 5. The highest designation possible for student growth is a 5. For the all-grades category, Jefferson County scored a 5 in the Composite score. The composite score includes all students who took an assessment in grades 3 - 12 in science, social studies, language arts, and mathematics. The district also scored a 5 in the individual categories of language arts, science, and social studies. The district scored a 4 in the area of mathematics. A 4 also represents growth above expectations. The district's combined literacy and numeracy score, measures math and language arts together, was a 5 for the 2021 - 2022 school year. This measure is one utilized by the department to understand the overall condition of a school district's core academic program. Dr. Tommy Arnold says “The hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, administrators and families has once again resulted in awesome gains for Jefferson County School. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

Michelle Walker, Supervisor of Secondary Education and Assessment, remarks, “This success is a result of the combined focused efforts of everyone using our high-quality instructional materials to provide rigorous content and using available data to respond to student needs regularly through the year. Additionally, our parents have partnered with us to support these efforts.

Kristi Waltke, Supervisor of Elementary Education says, “I am proud of the accomplishments of our students and teachers. Our TVAAS scores show that our students are outgrowing their grade level peers across the state. It is not by accident that our growth and achievement scores are up. The focus on our Core 4 values has served as a united vision for our district. However, we are not content. Now, we must focus on individual teachers and students that are not where we want them to be. We must provide the support needed to ensure high-quality instruction is happening every day for every student in every classroom.”

Trevor Collins, Supervisor of Data and Accountability adds, “Our assessments results continue to demonstrate the great work being done each day without our schools. Our K – 2 are building a strong base for the tested grade level to build on. Our Core 4 principles help establish and guide

the work as the year moves forward. We look forward to continued success.”
